Mohamed Gomar

Composer and orchestra leader Mohamed Gomar was born in Diala, Iraq. He studied musicology and specialized in the Iraqi Maqam. He is the founder of the Iraqi Maqam Ensemble and plays the Joza, a spiked fiddle with four strings and a bow.  The Joza  helps the singer to always find his/her voice in the mode. Mohamed Gomar is one of the few masters of this historic instrument. He works with singer Farida Mohammad Ali and together they form the core of the Iraqi Maqam Ensemble.
